Plane Spotting, Aircraft Around Las Vegas
Creech Air Force Base

Creech Air Force Base is located about 45 miles north of Las Vegas on Highway 95 at the town of Indian Springs. The town is small and located mostly on the south side of the highway. The base is located entirely on the north side of the highway, and the main entrance is located on the west end of town. Creech AFB is little more than an airfield and adjoining infrastructure, but it shares a boundary with the massive Nellis Air Force Base, which in turn is adjacent to the Nevada Test Site, providing huge areas for aerial and ground combat training.

Creech has a long history going back to WWII, but currently is used primarily for unmanned aerial vehicles (drone aircraft). Pilots at the base are trained to fly and control of MQ-1 Predators, MQ-9 Reapers, and probably other unmanned aircraft. Crews at the base also control drones in flight and in combat around the world. The Thunderbirds use Creech as their main training base.

Plane spotting should be done from the south side of the highway (map); the road along the north edge of the school yard provides good viewing. Additional plane spotting opportunities include the dry lake just east of Indian Springs (visible from the highway) that is used for bombing practice, old tanks and other trucks parked in the desert east of the highway that are used for 50-caliber machine gun fire and artillery fire, and drones are regularly flown south along the highway during training flights.
