Glossary -- Mine Openings: Adit

Mines are never safe to enter -- so don't. They can be, however, important habitat for wildlife, especially bats, some birds, and rattlesnakes. To accommodate wildlife while keeping curious humans safe, land managers sometimes cover the entrance with a grate. In many cases, they use a cable net, but more often these days they install metal bars or a complete cover.
