Mega Road Trip to Far-Eastern Canada, July 02
July 02

Day 42. July 02, 2014. Wednesday. Broad Cove Campground to Cheticamp Campground, Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Nova Scotia

We did a lot of walking and some driving on this second very hot day. We slept a little late to make up for not sleeping much on the ferry, then spent some time walking near the campground. From there, we backtracked a few miles and hiked about halfway up Franey Mountain looking for Bay-breasted Warblers. We heard about five (LB#634; heard only), but never saw a one for sure. It was too hot and became very windy, so we gave up and pushed on.

Back in town, we found wifi at the public library, then drove north around the end of Nova Scotia, stopping several times to see the sights and look for birds. When the road turned up into the highlands (to about 1,500 ft), we stopped to walk on a trail with 250-year-old sugar maple trees, the oldest stand of native trees in Nova Scotia, and we stopped at a wonderful little boardwalk through a fen-bog where Liz got to spend quality time with some of her old friends and some new ones too. We found two species of orchid blooming, pitcher plants blooming, and even some sundews.

We eventually drove on and got a quiet site in Cheticamp Campground where the wifi is not working and it is so hot that we will have to sleep in the tent.
