Montagnea (Montagnea spp.)
Small mushroom growing in desert sand

Montagnea Mushrooms (Montagnea spp.) are a small, arid-lands species that grows on a narrow stalk and looks like "normal" mushrooms (i.e., not puffballs and not elongate shaggy manes). These mushrooms appear in the desert after rains, but can remain for long periods of time. When ready, the caps open from the bottom and exposes spores to winds that disperse them widely.

Taxonomy: Kingdom: Fungi; Class: Agaricomycetes; Order: Agaricales; Family: Agaricaceae.
