General: Mojave Woodyaster (Xylorhiza tortifolia) is a short, but upright shrub. The leaves are narrow, hairy, and have prickles along the edges. The flowers are relatively large, purple sunflowers with a yellow center. Desert Aster is a fairly common component of vegetation communities in dry, well-drained gravelly areas on bajadas into the lower mountains in the Upper Sonoran (Mojave Desert Scrub and Pinyon-Juniper Woodland) life zone.
