General Description: Brown Thrashers (Toxostoma rufum) are large, sexually monomorphic, reddish-brown songbirds with a long, slightly decurved bill and heavily streaked breast. The gular mark is prominent, the two wingbars are white, and the eye is yellow.

Taxonomy: Passeriformes, Mimidae.

Favored Habitat: Damp forests in the eastern US with heavy cover.

Where to Find: Brown Thrashers are birds of the eastern forests, but this species regularly shows up at Corn Creek on the Desert National Wildlife Range during fall and winter.

Comments: Keep an eye out for large, reddish birds under heavy cover.
