Fruit Flies (Family Tephritidae)
(Class Insecta, Order Diptera)
Invertebrates Around Las Vegas, Wildlife Around Las Vegas
Tephritidae

General: Fruit Flies (Family Tephritidae) are small flies, and many species have highly-patterned wings that they frequently wave about. The behavior of wing-waving seems to deter jumping spiders, important predators on these flies, and the males wave them in courtship.

Fruit Flies lay eggs on leaves, flowers, and fruit, which the larvae eat. Many species are important pests on commercial crops.
