General: Western Pygmy-Blue Butterflies (Brephidium exilis) are tiny, sexually dimorphic butterflies. Males are smaller and darker than females. Upper-side of wings coppery with dark blue at the base; margin with a dark and a light band. Underside of wings white at the base and copper towards the edge. Hindwing with small black spots near the base and a row of four larger black spots with white centers near the margin.

This species can be quite common.

Taxonomy: Family: Gossamer-wing Butterflies (Lycaenidae); Subfamily: Blues (Polyommatinae).

Distribution: Occurs throughout western North America and south to northern South America.

Comments: Wing span only up to 3/4 inches.
