Zerene Fritillary (Speyeria zerene)

General: Zerene Fritillary Butterflies (Speyeria zerene) are medium-sized butterflies generally recognized by their orange wings with black patterning of irregular lines near the base of the wings and spots and crescents towards the tips. Spots on the underside of the hindwings are silver.

Taxonomy: Family: Brush-footed Butterflies (Nymphalidae); Subfamily: Heliconians or Longwings (Heliconiinae).

Comments: Occurs from central California to New Mexico and northward, including southern Nevada.
