General: Weidemeyer's Admiral Butterflies (Limenitis weidemeyerii) are recognized by the black wings with white stripes on fore- and hindwings. Other than the stripe, the hindwings are unmarked on the upper surface. There is some orange and blue on the underside of the wings.

Taxonomy: Family: Brush-footed Butterflies (Nymphalidae); Subfamily: Admirals and Relatives (Limenitidinae). Note that the genus is often spelled Limenitus.

Comments: This species occurs throughout the Rocky Mountain states from Canada to Mexico. Our local subspecies, the Nevada admiral (Limenitis weidemeyerii nevadae), occurs only in the Spring Mountains (fairly common) and in the Sheep Range (very few observations). It is considered a Spring Mountains endemic.
