General: Mourning Cloak Butterflies (Nymphalis antiopa) are recognized by their black wings with a line of blue spots along the trailing edge and a yellow border on the wings. Apparently, the edge can be white too. The trailing edge of the wings is notched and irregular.

Taxonomy: Family: Brush-footed Butterflies (Nymphalidae); Subfamily: True Brushfoots (Nymphalinae).

Comments: Adults live about 10 months and are among the longest-lived North American butterflies.
