Common Wood Nymph (Cercyonis pegala)

Identification: Common Wood Nymphs (Cercyonis pegala) are recognized by their brown wings with eye-spots on the underwings. The species is highly variable with lots of subspecies, but in general, the wings are brown and there are two large eye-spots with yellow rings on the underside of the forewings, and a line of smaller eye-spots on the underside of the hindwing.

Taxonomy: Family: Brush-footed Butterflies (Nymphalidae); Subfamily: Satyrs and Wood-Nymphs (Satyrinae).

Preferred Habitat: Grassy areas including prairies, meadows, and wet areas throughout North America from Canada to Mexico.

Where to Find: Grassy areas (host plants are grasses)
