General: Pipevine Swallowtail Butterflies (Battus philenor) are recognized by the iridescent black upper wing surfaces with a row of pale yellow spots towards the trailing edge. The underside of the hindwing with marked with a row of seven round orange spots on an iridescent blue background. The larvae of this species feed only on Pipevine plants (various species of Aristolochia).

Taxonomy: Family: Parnassians and Swallowtails (Papilionidae); Subfamily: Swallowtails (Papilioninae).

Comments: This species occurs throughout much of the U.S. from Oregon to New England and south into Mexico.
