California Mantid (Stagmomantis californica)

General: The Order Mantodea includes nine families of mantids. Mantids are also called "preying mantises" because they typically lay in wait holding their forelegs as if preying for another meal. When an insect comes within reach, they reach out extremely quickly and grab it.

Native desert mantids are small and brown or tan, while non-native species tend to be big and green.
