Common Green Darner Dragonfly (Anax junius)

General: Common Green Darners (Anax junius) typically rest hanging vertically on a plant stem. Around Las Vegas, these are the only dragonflies with a green thorax and blue abdomen. Eyes and face green. Most females are green with a brown abdomen, but some are colored similar to males.

These active creatures are harmless to humans, but they are voracious predators of small flying insects such as biting flies and mosquitoes. There are some good places to watch dragonflies around Las Vegas.
