HH-60 Pave Hawks are twin-engine medium-lift helicopters designed for all-weather combat search and rescue operations into hostile environments to recover downed aircrew and other personnel. The HH-60 is also capable of performing civil search and rescue, emergency medical evacuation, disaster relief, international aid, drug interdiction, and NASA space shuttle support. The Pave Hawk is a modified version of the Army Black Hawk helicopter with upgraded communications and navigation features, an automatic flight control system, night vision goggles with lighting, a forward looking infrared system that enhances night low-level operations, and an engine and rotor blade anti-icing system that enhances adverse weather capability. On-board equipment and features include a retractable in-flight refueling probe, axillary on-board fuel tanks, two crew-operated machine guns, an 8,000-pound capacity cargo hook, and folding rotor blades. Combat enhancements include a radar warning receiver, infrared jammer, and a flare/chaff dispensing system. Rescue equipment includes a 200-foot-long hoist cable capable of lifting 600-pound loads, and a personnel locating system that provides range and bearing information for survival radio beacons. |
