Old Hwy 127 at Mojave Street (note white trail marker; view N) |
Description
Shoshone is a small town with a bit of water and green amid a very arid piece of desert. This isn't a birding destination, but it is a nice place for traveling birders to stop for the night and do some evening and morning birding.
There are five birding trails in town. The White Trail starts on the west side of town and heads west to the open desert, then drops into a wash and loops back through the historic Dublin Gulch area.

Watch Out
Other than the standard warnings about hiking in the desert, ...this hike is pretty safe when the weather is cool. If the weather is hot, this area can be unbelievably hot, so be sure to bring water. The trail runs through open desert, so wear sensible shoes and a broad-brimmed hat too. |

While hiking, please respect the land and the other people out there, and please try to Leave No Trace of your passage. This trail is fairly long, so be sure to bring the 10 Essentials.
Getting to the Trailhead
The White Trail Trailhead is located on the west side of town, just south of the high school. From Hwy 127 in front of the Crowbar Cafe and facing north, turn left onto Old Hwy 127. In a few yards, turn left onto Mojave St. and drive back past the houses. Park at the end of the road.
The White Trail
From the trailhead (Table 1, Waypoint White-01), the trail runs west into the desert following white trail markers for about 1.5 miles. The trail eventually turns south (Wpt. White-07), hits an old dirt road, and returns to the downtown area via the Dublin Gulch historic area (Wpt. White-09). For details of the trail, see a description produced by the Amargosa Conservancy. |
