The Big House at the Walking Box Ranch was built by Hollywood silent film stars Clara Bow and Rex Bell in the early 1930s. They lived here, raising two boys, until the mid-1940s when they moved to Las Vegas. The ranch property changed ownership several times, and in the 1990s, it was used as an executive retreat by a mining company that rehabilitated and remodeled parts of the house. The area is owned by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and managed by Friends of Avi Kwa Ame. The area is watched by a caretaker, and three law enforcement officers live on-site in travel trailers. The site is available for researchers and occasional tours, but otherwise it is closed to the public. |
