Overview
Mid Hills Campground, located at 5,600 feet elevation, is the cool and shady campground in the Preserve, at least for the campsites that didn't burn in the 2005 Hackberry Fire. About half of the 26 campsites were burned, but the remainder are surrounded by pinyon pine and juniper trees. The access road is unpaved and is not recommended for RVs or trailers.
Facilities include vault toilets, trash cans, drinking water, fire rings, and picnic tables. Few sites are suitable for RVs, and there are no dump station or utility hookups. Fees are $12 per night. All campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis; reservations are not accepted.

Getting to Mid Hills Campground
This campground is located in Mojave National Preserve, about 2 hours south of Las Vegas. From town, drive out towards the Hole-in-the-Wall Visitor Center. About 7 miles north of the visitor center, turn right into Wild Horse Road. Watch for the campground sign. Drive west 2 miles to the campground entrance, on the right.
Camping here on a clear night can give you an idea of what the night sky looks like. If you grew up in Las Vegas, you might never have seen the Milky Way! |
