During the first half of the hike, the goal is to climb onto the saddle between Peak 1782 and Peak 1712. While hiking, the saddle is hard to keep track of, but the rocky crags can be seen from miles around. The trail passes through a gate at the toe of the crags. Hikers who lose the sometimes-obscure trail can always walk overland to the crags and get back on trail.

During the second half of the hike, the goal is to get down Barber Canyon. All points downhill lead to Barber Canyon. Watch for a band of white cliffs capped by black rock on the flanks of Barber Peak (east side of Barber Canyon), and which for the towering white Opalite Cliffs to the west of Barber Canyon.
