Overview

Mitchell Caverns Visitor Center (part of the California State Park System) is a small museum housed in one of Mr. Mitchell's original stone buildings. The Information Desk is staffed by dedicated state park employees who know the area well and can answer all sorts of questions. Indoor and outdoor exhibits provide information about the Mitchell family and their life here, as well as natural history of the area.

The visitor center is where visitors meet the ranger-guide who leads the nature walk into the caverns.

The park is open all year, but only on Fridays, Saturday, and Sundays (plus holiday Mondays) The park is closed weekly Monday through Thursday, plus Christmas and New Year's Day. Tour fees are based on age, ranging up to $10 per adult. Tours are twice per day and limited to 15 people. For information on reservations, visit the Providence Mountains State Park website. Getting To Mitchell Caverns Visitor Center

The visitor center is located north of Interstate 40 on the far north end of Essex Road.

From Las Vegas, drive south on I-15 into Mojave National Preserve and drive to the Hole-in-the-Wall Visitor Center (Table 1, Site 0502). From Black Canyon Road at Hole-in-the-Wall Road (Site 0836), continue south on Black Canyon Road 9.7 miles to a T-intersection with Essex Road (Site 0845). Turn right onto Essex Road and drive 6.0 miles to the end of the road (Site 0503). Park in the big parking lot and walk up the hill to the Visitor Center.

From the south, exit I-40 onto Essex Road and drive north 15.7 miles to the end of the road. Park in the big parking lot and walk up the hill to the Visitor Center.
