Creosote-Bursage Flats (Lower Sonoran Life Zone, BLM Southern Desert Scrub)
Non-technical Description: A vast expanse of seemingly uniform-height shrubs on desert flats.
Technical Description: The Creosote-Bursage Flats association occurs throughout the Las Vegas area on broad flats and gently-sloping hillsides primarily at elevations below 4,000 feet where annual precipitation is 6 inches or less and unreliable. Temperature extremes often exceed 110ºF during summer and 25ºF during winter.
Widely spaced Creosote Bush and White Bursage are dominant in this association, often occurring alone or with Mojave Yucca at slightly higher elevations. Washes often support Catclaw Acacia (Acacia greggii). Annual forbs (spring wildflowers) are abundant after wet winters, but generally absent otherwise. The non-native Red Brome Grass can be abundant. |
