General: Scented Shootingstar (Dodecatheon redolens) is a perennial forb that grows as a tuft of long, narrow leaves. In spring, stalks produce the unusual "shootingstar" flowers above the tuft of leaves.
Leaf blades, petioles, and bracts glandular-pubescent. Flowers have 5 swept-back petals; corolla tube covers the stamen filaments with only the anthers sticking out of the tube; anther tips acute.
Scented Shootingstar is an uncommon component of vegetation communities in wet areas in the lower and middle-elevation mountains in the Upper Sonoran (Pinyon-Juniper Woodland), Transition (Yellow Pine Forest), and Canadian (Pine-Fir Forest) life zones.
Around Las Vegas, look for Scented Shootingstar in wet places in the Spring Mountains NRA in places like Mack's Canyon and Cold Creek.
Family: Primrose (Primulaceae). Also called Primula fragrans, scented shooting star. |
