Nevada Goldeneye

General: Nevada Goldeneye (Heliomeris multiflora var. nevadensis) is a variety of the more widespread Showy Goldeneye (Heliomeris multiflora). Nevada Goldeneye is a perennial forb with long, narrow leaves that come off the stems in pairs (leaves opposite). The stems turn red with age. The flower is a relatively large, yellow sunflower.

In this variety, the cauline leaves mostly are opposite, leaf blades lance-ovate, lance-linear, or linear, 2–5 mm wide, apices acute, margins usually rolled under.

Nevada Goldeneye is a fairly common component of vegetation communities in dry, well-drained gravelly areas on bajadas and into the mountains from about 4,000 to 8,000-ft elevation in the Upper Sonoran (Mojave Desert Scrub and Pinyon-Juniper Woodland) and Transition (Yellow Pine Forest) life zones.

Around Las Vegas, look for Nevada Goldeneye at Red Rock Canyon NCA, up in the Spring Mountains and Sheep Range, and Basin and Range National Monument.
