General: Howard's Evening Primrose (Oenothera howardii) is a perennial forb that opens yellow flowers in the evening. By morning, the flowers are fading to red. The leaves are oblanceolate to about 8 inches long and somewhat thickened. The flowers are large, with the floral tube about 3-4 inches long, and the petals spreading to about 4-5 inches across.
Howard's Evening Primrose is an uncommon component of vegetation communities in dry, well-drained gravelly areas on mountain hillsides in the Upper Sonoran (Pinyon-Juniper Woodland), Transition (Yellow Pine Forest) and Canadian (Pine-Fir Forest) life zones.
Around Las Vegas, look for Howard's Evening Primrose up on Mt. Charleston and in the Sheep Range.
