General: Siler's Penstemon (Penstemon linarioides ssp. sileri) is a low-growing perennial forb that has straight stems and short, linear leaves. The lavender flowers are bilaterally symmetrical with purple lines and gland-tipped hairs.
Siler's Penstemon is an uncommon component of vegetation communities in dry, well-drained gravelly areas in the mountains in the Upper Sonoran (Pinyon-Juniper Woodland) and Transition (Yellow Pine Forest) life zones.
Around Las Vegas, look for Siler's Penstemon up in the Sheep Range.
Family: Figwort (Scrophulariaceae). Recent genetic research suggests that Penstemon should be included in the Plantaginaceae. |
