In general, weeds are any plants growing in places where they aren't wanted, but for purposes here, weeds are non-native species growing in native habitats. Some weeds tend to get started, but never spread or just die out. Other weeds are aggressive competitors and can invade native habitats and drive out native species; these species are considered Invasive Weeds. A subset of invasive weeds are defined in Nevada State Law as Noxious Weeds. As defined, the phrase "Noxious Weed" means any species of plant that is, or is likely to be, detrimental or destructive and difficult to control or eradicate (Nevada Revised Statute 555.005). Species are added to the list as necessary; in 2020, there were 47 species on the Nevada Noxious Weed List. If hikers and other visitors to the native habitats around Las Vegas find any Noxious Weeds, please report them to the Nevada Department of Agriculture. If you have these species on your private property, be sure to eradicate them. Listed here are weed species that occur in the desert around Las Vegas.
