Barnyard Duck (Anas domesticus)
Birds Around Las Vegas, Wildlife Around Las Vegas |
|
General Description: Barnyard Ducks (Anas domesticus) are domestic ducks that escaped or were released from captivity and now live "wild," or feral, in local ponds and lakes. Barnyard ducks are white, but they breed with other forms of feral ducks and come in a motley range of mixes. Most domestic ducks are descended from wild Mallards, and it is not uncommon to see overly large, domestic mallards in neighborhood ponds.
Favored Habitat: Ponds in parks and neighborhoods.

|
Where to Find: Neighborhood ponds and city parks (e.g., Lorenzi Park, Sunset Park, and Floyd Lamb State Park).
Comments: Be sure to bring corn or peas rather than bread, which is bad for their digestive systems. |

Typical mating behavior (aka rape) in domestic ducks. The male climbs onto the female and tries to hold her head underwater |
With the female held underwater,
another male tries to join in |
The attacking male still
holds her underwater... |
As the female tires, the male turns parallel to her
and pushes her head underwater again |
To avoid being drowned, with her head going under again, her tail comes up and the male finishes his attack |
Hybrid or domestic mallard. The color pattern resembles a male mallard, but it clearly isn't right |
