General Description: Mottled Ducks (Anas fulvigula) are large pond ducks that look similar to female Mallards. On careful inspection, Mottled Ducks are more brown-and- cinnamon mottled overall with a pale head, blue-green speculum, and yellowish bill. The wing linings are white.
Taxonomy: Anseriformes, Anatidae, Anatinae
Favored Habitat: Salt marshes.
Where to Find: Don't look for Mottled Ducks around Las Vegas. Rather, look for them in southeastern salt marshes all year.
Comments: Mottled Ducks have been mating with Mallards to the detriment of the Mottled Duck species, as Mottled Duck genes are being swamped out. |
