General Description: Gunnison Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus minimus), are large ground birds -- nearly the size of a small turkey. Males are gray-brown with a black belly, black face, white collar, yellow eyebrows, and a long spiky tail with white banding. Females are smaller than males and gray-brown overall with a black belly. These birds are similar to Greater Sage-Grouse, but they are smaller, the tail is lighter-colored and shorter, and the head plumes are more prominent.
Taxonomy: Galliformes, Phasianidae, Tetraoninae
Favored Habitat: Open country with low-growing sagebrush.
Where to Find: Gunnison Sage-grouse occur northeast of the Las Vegas area. Look for them in east-central Utah and southwestern Colorado in areas with sagebrush. Try to arrange a tour with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources near Monticello, Utah, or visit a public viewing site just east of Gunnison, Colorado.
