General Description: Willow Ptarmigans (Lagopus lagopus) are large, chicken-like ground birds (pheasants) with different summer and winter plumages. During summer, they are mottled brown with white wings and blend in with their forest environment; and during winter, they are white and blend in with the snow. In all plumages, however, the outer tail feathers are black.
Taxonomy: Galliformes, Phasianidae, Tetraoninae
Favored Habitat: Forested areas in the great northern forest (taiga) and high arctic tundra.
Where to Find: Don't look for Willow Ptarmigan around Las Vegas. Rather, look for them in Alaska and Canada. |
