General Description: Scaled Quail (Callipepla squamata) are plump ground birds. The sexes look alike: gray overall with a scaly appearance due to black edges on gray feathers. They have a short, white-tipped crest on the top of the head.
Taxonomy: Galliformes, Odontophoridae
Favored Habitat: Shrubby desert area near water.
Where to Find: Don't look for Scaled Quail around Las Vegas. Rather, look for them from southeast Arizona to southwest Kansas, and southward into Mexico.
