Magnificent Frigatebird (Fregata magnificens)

General Description: Magnificent Frigatebird (Fregata magnificens) are large, buoyant seabirds with black plumage; long (to 8 ft wingspan), narrow wings, and a deeply forked tail. Males have an inflatable red gular sac used to attract mates. Females have white on the breast and belly.

Taxonomy: Suliformes, Fregatidae

Favored Habitat: Open ocean with lots of fish to eat.

Where to Find: Don't look for Magnificent Frigatebird around Las Vegas. Rather, look for them in the Gulf of California and south along the Pacific Coast to northwestern South America and along the Atlantic Coast too. Around Las Vegas, keep an eye out for them during migration in places like Sunset Park, where a confused bird showed up in February 2013.
