General Description: Merlins (Falco columbarius) are little falcons of the open sky that hunt other birds and sometimes bats. Merlins are less well marked than our other falcons, but they are slate gray above with a dark crown and faint mustache marks. The belly is light with heavy dark streaks, as one might expect for a juvenile hawk. The tail is banded. Falcons are recognized from other birds of prey by the long, narrow, pointed wings.
Taxonomy: Falconiformes, Falconidae, Falconinae
