General Description: Elf Owls (Micrathene whitneyi) are tiny owls with yellow eyes and a very short tail. No ear tufts. Roosts in cavities, including Saguaro Cactus cavities and holes in trees.
Taxonomy: Strigiformes, Strigidae.
Favored Habitat: Sonoran Desert canyons with oaks and sycamore trees, Saguaro Cactus desert scrub.
Where to Find: Don't look for Elf Owls around Las Vegas. Rather, look for them in southern Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.
