General Description: Rivoli's Hummingbirds (Eugenes fulgens) are large hummingbirds that hover in front of flowers and feed on nectar.

Adult male Rivoli's Hummingbirds have an iridescent purple crown, an iridescent green throat, and a black belly. Adult females are green above and grayish under, and a white line on the face behind the eye.

Taxonomy: Apodiformes, Trochilidae, Trochilinae. Formerly Magnificent Hummingbird until 2017.

Rivoli's Hummingbird (Eugenes fulgens)

Favored Habitat: Open woodlands and shrubby areas primarily in pine-oak and deciduous woodland in Mexican highlands.

Where to Find: Don't look for Rivoli's Hummingbirds around Las Vegas. Rather, look for them in the mountains of Mexico and in streamside habitats in canyons of Southeastern Arizona mountains. These birds are fairly common around Portal, Arizona during spring and summer.
