General Description: Arizona Woodpeckers (Picoides arizonae) are medium-sized woodpeckers with a solid brown back and wings. The face is white with a heavy black mustache mark and a large brown spot behind the eye. The underparts are white with black spots. Males have a bit of red on the back of the head.
Taxonomy: Piciformes, Picidae, Picinae. Formerly lumped with Strickland's Woodpecker, but now known to be a separate species.
Where to Find: Don't look for Arizona Woodpeckers around Las Vegas; rather, look for them in the pine-oak woodlands of southeastern Arizona, southwestern New Mexico, and south into Mexico. |
