General Description: Black-backed Woodpeckers (Picoides arcticus) are black woodpeckers with a yellow cap and a bold white stripe on the face. The entire back is black, the underparts are white with black streaks.
Taxonomy: Piciformes, Picidae, Picinae.
Favored Habitat: High, alpine forests with dead trees.
Where to Find: Don't look for Back-backs around Las Vegas; rather, look for them in the high Sierra Nevada Mountains of California or around Lake Tahoe (or go to Canada).
