General Description: Gray Vireos (Vireo vicinior) are small, gray, sexually monomorphic songbirds with big voices and relatively heavy bills. Typical vireo traits (spectacles and wingbars) are faint, but they do have a narrow white eyering. Flicks the tail. Song is typical for a vireo (discrete phrases rising and falling), but also makes buzzy, wren-like calls.

Favored Habitat: Shrubby canyons. |

Where to Find: During migration, Gray Vireos can be found everywhere, but when you look for them, they are nowhere to be found. For this species, check the Willow Springs Canyon at Red Rock Canyon NCA during spring.
