General Description: Chestnut-backed Chickadees (Poecile rufescens) are tiny gray birds with a thin, pointy beak and chestnut-red on the back, shoulder, and flanks. The top of the head and throat are solid black, and the side of the face is white. In good lighting, it can be seen that the crown is actually brown. The common chickadee around Las Vegas is the Mountain Chickadee, which has a white eyebrow line in the black cap and lack the chestnut colors.
Taxonomy: Passeriformes, Paridae.
Favored Habitat: Oak or piney woods, primarily in coastal mountain ranges, but also at lower elevations especially during winter. |
