General Description: Mountain Bluebirds (Sialia currucoides) are small, sexually dimorphic songbirds. Males are bright blue from head to tail, while females are pale blue on the back and light gray under. Juveniles are more pale than females, and they have a streaked front.
Taxonomy: Passeriformes, Turdidae.
Favored Habitat: Woods in the mountains, also deserts during winter.
Where to Find: During summer, look for Mountain Bluebirds in higher elevations in places such as Mt. Charleston and the Sheep Range. During winter, these birds come down to lower elevations and can be found in the desert at Calico Basin, other places in Red Rock Canyon NCA, and occasionally in other low-desert areas. |
