General Description: Townsend's Warblers (Setophaga townsendi) are sexually dimorphic warblers. In males, the crown, ear patch, and throat are black, and the rest of the head and breast are yellow. There are black streaks on the sides and flanks. The wings are black with white wingbars. Females are a dull version of the male, but without the black throat. No other bird in the Las Vegas area has a facial pattern like this.
Taxonomy: Passeriformes, Parulidae. Formerly Dendroica townsendi.
Favored Habitat: Mountains.
Where to Find: Around Las Vegas, look for Townsend's Warblers in pine forests on Mt Charleston and in the Desert National Wildlife Range. |
