Canyon Towhee (Pipilo fuscus)

General Description: Canyon Towhees (Melozone fusca) are large, sexually monomorphic sparrows. They are light gray-brown overall with a black central spot, a bit of a dark necklace, a reddish cap, and reddish-brown under the tail (rusty red under-tail coverts).

Taxonomy: Passeriformes, Emberizidae. Formerly Pipilo fuscus.

Favored Habitat: Shrubby desert hills and canyons.

Where to Find: Don't look for Canyon Towhees around Las Vegas. Rather, look for them from western Arizona to southern Colorado and west Texas, and south into Mexico.
