General Description: Northern Cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis) are medium-sized, sexually dimorphic finches with a very large, orange bill. Males are bright red overall with a tall crest and a black face. The wings are somewhat darker than the rest of the body. Females are brown overall with a reddish crest and reddish in the wings and tail. On the bill, the distal portion of the "lip" line is straight (not hooked or notched; compare with Pyrrhuloxia).
