General Description: Flannelmouth Suckers (Catostomus latipinnis) are cylindrical, fusiform fish with large pectoral and dorsal fins, and a deeply notched tail fin. The mouth is turned down to form a sucker. Flannelmouth Suckers are olive-green above and sliver-yellow below. Adults grow to about 26 inches.

Taxonomy: Family: Catostomidae.

Where to Find: Flannelmouth suckers occur from Wyoming to California, including the Colorado River and tributaries such as the Virgin River in Zion National Park.

Flannelmouth Sucker (Catostomus latipinnis)

Habitat: Prefers rivers and streams with deep and quiet, rocky or gravely pools. Intolerant of lake conditions created by dams. Lays eggs in gravel areas.

Diet: Feeds mostly on aquatic insect larvae and algae.
