General: Jerusalem Crickets, also called Potato Bugs (Order Orthoptera, Suborder Ensifera, Family Stenopelmatidae, possibly Stenopelmatus fuscus), are flightless, ground dwelling insects with long antennae (in the photos here, the antennae are broken off the dead and desiccated specimen).
Front of pronotum is wide; antennae widely separated at base; head large. Tibiae are robust with digging spines. Hind femora do not extend beyond tip of abdomen.
Habitat: Ground dwelling, found under rocks and logs or open ground at night.
Food: Feeds on roots, decaying vegetation, and even potatoes. Predatory on other insects
Can deliver a strong bite. |
