Description: Gunnison's Prairie Dogs (Cynomys gunnisoni) are large, yellowish or cinnamon colored ground squirrels with a short, white tail and some black in the dorsal fur. The head and body are about 11-12 inches long, and the tail is another 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 inches. The ears are small, and the belly is light. The side of the face and chin are white, and there are dark spots above and below the eyes.
Taxonomy: Class Mammalia (mammals); Order Rodentia (rodents); Family Sciuridae (squirrels). Formerly a southern subspecies of White-tailed Prairie Dog (Cynomys leucurus).
Breeding: Prairie dogs are social. Three or four young are produced in spring and become sexually mature after one year. |
