Least Chipmunks have a very long tail |
Description: Least Chipmunks (Neotamias minimus) are small, reddish-brown squirrels with black and white stripes on the face and on the back. The head and body are about 3-inches long, and the tail is about 4-5 inches long. Their body colors are variable, but most have reddish sides with gray on the hips. The stripes on the back extend to the base of the tail. When Least Chipmunks run, they tend to hold the tail straight up in the air.
This species lives in central and northern Nevada in deserts and mountains with sagebrush.
In the Las Vegas area, only chipmunks have stripes on the face, and chipmunks are equally at home on the ground and in the trees. |
