Description: Fox Squirrels (Sciurus niger) are large, gray and orange tree squirrels with long, bushy tails. The tail is gray above, orange below, and bordered with orange. The belly is orange. The head and body are 10-15 inches long, and the tail is another 9-14 inches long. This species is variable, with some populations lacking orange (i.e., all gray) and others all black or all white.
Habitat: Fox Squirrels live in forested areas throughout eastern hardwood and piney woods where nut trees, such a pecan trees, walnut trees, and other nut trees are available for food.
Where to Find: Don't look for Fox Squirrels around Las Vegas, rather, look for them from the Dakotas to central Texas and eastward. They have been widely introduced in cities of the Pacific states, so also keep an eye out for big, orange-bellied tree squirrels in places like San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Portland. |
