General Description: Florida Red-bellied Cooters (Pseudemys nelsoni) are dark pond turtles with a domed shell streaked with yellow and red. This species is separated from similar species by the reddish plastron (mostly reddish to yellow with a tinge of red) and a large "tooth" on each side of the beak. The skin of the face and legs is dark and heavily striped with yellow.
Taxonomy: Sliders (Emydidae).
Where to Find: Don't look for Florida Red-bellied Cooters around Las Vegas. Rather, look for them in Florida and south Georgia. |
